This Privacy Policy explains how Gand Technology Services ("Gand", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects your personal information when you use the skriv.ist website and reading application (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Information we collect

Account information

When you sign in, we collect the information provided by your authentication provider (vigil.center single sign-on): a unique user identifier and your display identity (name and handle). The sign-in flow does not share your email address with the Service. We use this solely to identify your account and sync your library across devices.

Your books and reading data

To provide cloud sync, we store the EPUB files you upload, cover images, book metadata, reading progress (current location), completion status, and your per-book reading preferences (theme, font, ambient sound, voice). Free-tier accounts have a limited number of cloud books; paid accounts have a higher limit.

Text-to-speech

Skrivist offers three read-aloud modes. Browser text-to-speech uses your browser's or operating system's speech voices; depending on the voice you select, the passage may be processed on your device or by that voice provider's service — see your browser's documentation. Skrivist TTS (subscribers) sends the passage being read, the selected voice, and the content language to our speech service to synthesize audio; audio for your own books is not stored on our servers (it may be cached on your device), while audio for the public-domain books in the free library may be cached in shared storage so other readers do not need to re-synthesize it. A custom TTS server (Maker plan) receives the same passage data at the server you configure, which is outside our control.

Local device data

The Service is designed to work offline. Books and reading data may be cached locally on your device using IndexedDB or similar browser storage. Theme and language preferences are stored in your browser's localStorage.

Usage and diagnostic data

The app contains no advertising or behavioral-analytics trackers. Our website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or identify individuals. Our servers keep operational logs (request metadata, error details, and in some cases your account identifier and book titles — for example when the cloud-library quota job removes over-limit books) so we can troubleshoot the Service; logs are retained for a limited period, typically 30 days.

Payment information

Purchases and subscriptions are processed by our payment partner, Polar. We do not collect or store your credit card details. Polar provides us with transaction identifiers and subscription status so we can manage your entitlements.

Cloud waitlist

Cloud waitlist: if you email [email protected] to join the Cloud waitlist, we keep your email address only to tell you when Cloud opens, then delete it. Ask us any time to remove it.

3. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with trusted service providers who help us operate the Service:

• Google Firebase — authentication, cloud database (Firestore), and cloud storage
• Polar — payment processing and subscription management
• Cloudflare — website hosting, analytics, and security

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights, or to prevent harm.

4. Data retention

We keep your account data and uploaded books for as long as your account is active. Cloud storage is subject to your plan's limit (10 cloud books on the Free plan). If your cloud library exceeds the limit — for example after a subscription ends — the app shows warnings on successive days; if the excess remains after the warning period (currently three daily warnings), the least recently updated excess books are removed from cloud storage, including their EPUB files and covers. Copies stored on your devices are not affected. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal information and uploaded content from our active systems within a reasonable period, typically within 30 days. Some anonymized or aggregated data may be retained for analytics and security purposes.

5. Your rights and choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. You can request account deletion at any time by contacting us. You may also manage cookies and local storage through your browser settings.

6. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and access controls. However, no online service can guarantee absolute security. Please use a strong, unique password for your authentication provider.

7. Children's privacy

The Service is not intended for children under 13 years of age (or the minimum legal age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. International transfers

Your data may be stored and processed in countries other than your own, including on servers operated by Google Cloud and Cloudflare. We rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, to protect your data during international transfers.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
